Paris is more than 2,000 years old. Gauls of the Parisii tribe settled there between 250 and 200 BC and founded a fishing village on an island in the river that is the present-day Ile de la Cité -- the center around which Paris developed.
Known as Lutetia (Lutece) in ancient times, Paris was conquered by Julius Caesar in 52 BC, and existed as a regional center under the Romans and in the early Middle Ages. In 987, HUGH CAPET, Count of Paris, became king of France, and under his successors, the CAPETIANS, the city's position as the nation's capital became established. Often characterized as spirited and rebellious, the people of Paris first declared themselves an independent commune under the leadership of Etienne Marcel in 1355-58. The storming of the Bastille in 1789 was the first of a series of key actions by the Parisian people during the FRENCH REVOLUTION. Paris also played a major role in the revolutions of 1830 and 1848. In 1871, during the FRANCO-PRUSSIAN WAR , the city was besieged for four months until France surrendered. After German troops withdrew, French radicals briefly established the COMMUNE OF PARIS. During World War I the Germans were prevented from reaching Paris, but they occupied the city during World War II from 1940 to 1944. Paris was again the scene of violence during the student riots of 1968.
Paris today maintains its importance, character, and charm, though its appearance is being transformed by structures such as the BEAUBOURG and by the ambitious grands projets building program carried out under the presidency of François Mitterrand. In addition to the La Défense arch and the Bastille Opéra, Mitterrand's projects have included the renovation of the Louvre by architect I. M. Pei, the La Villette complex on the northeastern edge of the city, and, in the southeast, the Bibliothèque de France, a great computer-age library.
Planning for Paris and the Paris Basin region includes consideration of large land areas in the Seine River valley all the way to the mouth of the river. New towns, parks, industrial locations, and expanded functions of existing towns are contemplated for this corridor on both sides of the Seine.

נולדתי בשנת 1938 לאסתר וללייביש שטיינברג בפריז, צרפת. הוריי היו בעליי מסעדה כשרה למהדרין. גרנו ברובע היהודי הידוע "הפלעצל" המאוכלס ברובו ביהודים דתיים. הבית היה בעל צביון דתי-חרדי. המשפחה מנתה ארבעה ילדים: ברוך, שרה, יהושע ואני. למדנו בבית הספר הממלכתי הצרפתי. בבית דיברו יידיש וצרפתית. המצב הכלכלי בבית היה טוב. הוריי היו ידועים ומוכרים בסביבתם בנדיבותם הרבה - לא מעט אנשים נתמכו בידי הוריי ואכלו חינם במסעדה.
הכול התמוטט כשב-14 ביוניי 1940 הגרמנים כבשו את פריז וכל הגברים היהודים צוּווּ להתיצב במשטרה. אבי נעצר והועבר למחנה עבודה "בון לה רולנד" שמחוץ לפריז. אושר לנו לבקר את אבא במחנה ובכל ביקור אמי לקחה ילד אחר. במחנה התנהלו חיי דת: תפילות ולימוד תורה. במחנה זה היה אבי עם גיסו וחבר טוב.
אמי ניסתה בכל כוחה להמשיך ולנהל את המסעדה ששימשה עתה גם כמקום מסתור לפליטים יהודים. רבים חבים לאמי את חייהם. כשנודע לאמי שעומדים לאסור את הנשים והילדים, החליטה להפריד את המשפחה. את אחי הצעיר ואותי שלחה לעיר ליאון, לבית אחותה. הפרידה הייתה קשה. אני בת שלוש ואחי בן השנה נקרעים מזרועות אימא ובוכים. אמי ושני אחיי האחרים פנו לעיר ניצה. בדרך נודע להם שאף ניצה נכבשה ולכן נדדו לדרום מערב צרפת לעיירה נידחת בשם שמפילט והתגוררו במבנה ביער. לאחר חודשים מספר הגענו גם אחי ואני לעיירה. בעיירה זו לא היה צורך לענוד טלאי צהוב. אמי שהיתה דתית חרדית ביקשה מאחת הכפריות חלב עבורנו ושתחלוב ישירות לכלי שאמי הביאה בגלל הכשרות. הכפרייה שאלה האם נכון שבפריז רודפים יהודים ואם נכון שליהודים יש קרניים? אימא השיבה "הנה יהודיה לפנייך – הסתכלי נא" האישה הייתה המומה. זכינו ליחס נפלא מאנשי הכפר, הם לא הלשינו על משפחתנו ואף סייעו לנו לשמור את השבתות והחגים.
במאי 1941 נשלח אבי למחנה ההשמדה אושוויץ בירקנאו. חבר של אבי שהיה עמו סיפר כי אבי נפטר ממחלת הטיפוס.
עד שנת 1945 חיינו בעיירה ולמדנו בגן הילדים ובבית הספר עם הכפריים. כשהגרמנים הגיעו לעיירה וחיפשו יהודים, הוסתרנו בידי המקומיים.
בתום המלחמה שבנו לפריז ואמי עסקה במלאכות רבות לפרנסת המשפחה. אמי נישאה בשנית.
בשנת 1949 עלינו ארצה באנייה "נגבה". הגענו לבית עולים בבאר יעקב. סיימתי את לימודיי התיכון בכפר בתיה, שם פגשתי את דב בעלי לעתיד ונישאנו בשנת 1959. למדתי בסמינר ועבדתי בהוראה שנים רבות בתפקידים שונים. כשפרשתי זכיתי לספר הוקרה מעובדי בית הספר "החיל" בת"א.
בשנת 1988, לאחר שחגגנו לאמי ז"ל יום הולדת 80 בחברת ילדיה, נכדיה, חברים וקרובי משפחה וסיפרנו את ספור חייה של אמי, סיפרה אחיינית שלי לאחותי שהיא קראה בעיתון "מעריב" במדור "קוראנו כותבים" מודעה ובה פנייה: "אני מחפש את מיטבי" אישה שהסתירה אותו בתקופת המלחמה כשהיה בן 13 במסעדה בפריז ולה ארבעה ילדים ובעלה נלקח למחנה אושוויץ. האחיינית קישרה בין הדברים והבינה שוודאי מדובר באמי. הסתבר שהאיש, יהודי חרדי, גר בלונדון. האיש הגיע לארץ לפגוש את אמי, אך היא לא זכרה את ספורו. הוא הקשה בשאלות. "האם יש לך מפה לבנה דמשקאית עם מונוגרמה?" אימא השיבה בחיוב, ענה לה האיש כי אביו נתן לה אותה במתנה. האיש תיאר במדויק את הדירה וסיפר אפיזודות קטנות שאת כולן זכרה אמי. לבסוף שאל את השאלה המכרעת, "האם נסעת פעם ביום שישי להביא ספר תורה למחנה בו היה עצור בעלך?" אמי השיבה בחיוב, וסיפרה שהיה זה יום שישי והיא חזרה מאוחר, אחרי הדלקת נרות השבת, ודאגה מאד לילדיה. וכששאל: "ומי שמר על ארבעת ילדייך?" לא ידעה להשיב, והאיש אמר "אני, שמרתי עליהם". אמי הייתה בהלם והזילה דמעות, כי לא יכלה לזכרו. מאותו יום ואילך נוצר מחדש קשר אמיץ ביניהם שנמשך עד ליום מותה בשנת 1998 והאיש קרא לה תמיד – "דודה שלי".
